San Francisco’s premier party in a park celebrates its 10th anniversary this year with a massive lineup that, as in previous years, celebrates both music royalty and the new guard. While the headliners are of course must-sees (Metallica, The Who and Gorillaz), here are top five acts who are all making their Outside Lands (11-13 August) debuts and shouldn’t be missed.
SOHN
If SOHN is playing early, let him ease you into the day. If he’s playing late, let him tuck you into bed.
Dr. Octago
Kool Keith, Dan the Automator and DJ Qbert unleashed their landmark album Dr. Octagonecologyst in 1996 and then proceeded to wait 20 years before playing it live at a couple small clubs in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Their Outside Lands stop is only one of two planned shows this year.
San Fermin
Bucking the trend of stripped back pop music, San Fermin is an 8-piece live band that believes more is more. And in their case, they’re more than right.
A Tribe Called Quest
This could be it. This could be your last chance to see Tribe. That in itself is worth the price of admission.
Muna
The Socal electronic-tinged pop trio identify as queer and aren’t afraid to address big issues in their music. But none of this is at the expense of the music itself, which is catchy enough to get anyone’s toes tapping.
