Fabric resident Craig Richards has hand selected the very best electronic music artists for Houghton Festival in August. We’ve picked our top 5 acts from the lineup, curated by Craig as a personal journey through his record crates. With a site located deep in the Norfolk countryside in the grounds of palatial Houghton Hall, bespoke world class sound systems will be paired to stages with spontaneous back-to-back sets encouraged and longer DJ sets will be the norm.
1. Ricardo Villalobos
The infamous Chilean DJ’s rambling sets have been dividing audiences around the world for years. Although his tracks are never commercial, they are immensely successful and he’s well known even beyond the borders of the underground music scene. We look forward to seeing what comes out of his bag in what is sure to be an overrunning set.
2. Cobblestone Jazz
Canadian trio Cobblestone Jazz use early computers and analogue instruments to create improvised live jazz electronica. We can't wait to hear their complex acid house sound, bound to go down well in the hazy August heat!
3. Nicolas Jaar
Ever an enigmatic figure, Nicolas Jaar is perhaps best known for his Darkside project. In the last few years, he has been busy releasing two LPs and a brace of EPs as well as remixing the likes of Florence and the Machine and Grizzly Bear. His eclectic DJ sets showcase the breadth of his selection from ambient to floor filling music, our ears can't wait for this one!.
4. Tony Allen
The drummer and a key member of Fela Kuti's band Africa 70 from 1968 to 1979, Tony was one of the primary co-founders of the genre of Afrobeat music, with Fela once stating that "without Tony Allen, there would be no Afrobeat.” For his show at Houghton, Tony will be exploring Jazz rhythms and will be showcasing a tribute to Jazz legend Art Blakey.
5. Derrick Carter
A pioneer of the Chicago house scene in the 1990s Derrick Carter started DJing aged 9, playing at family reunions. He has since gone become one of the key players in house music. Derrick is sure to bring the vibes and keep the dancefloor jumping till close.
