Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Garth Brooks to star in sequel of This Is Spinal Tap
Rob Reiner revealed last year that he was working on a sequel for the iconic 1984 mockumentary film This Is Spinal Tap. Speaking to Richard Herring on his RHLSTP podcast, the director shared more about the film.
The forthcoming sequel to This Is Spinal Tap is set to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original film.
“I can tell you hardly a day goes by without someone saying, why don’t you do another one? For so many years, we said, ‘nah.’ It wasn’t until we came up with the right idea how to do this. You don’t want to just do it, to do it. You want to honour the first one and push it a little further with the story," Reiner said to Deadline, in an interview last year.
Speaking on whether he expected the influence that the original film would have, to this day, Reiner said: "Never. We wound up in the American national film registry – it's bizarre that it happened – when we first previewed it, we previewed it at a theatre in Dallas, Texas, and the people there didn' tknow what the heck they were looking at. They came up to me afterwards and said: 'I don't understand. Why would you make a movie about a band that nobody's ever heard of, and they're so bad! You should make a movie about The Beatles or The Rolling Stones."

Now it appears that Reiner is going to somewhat appease those theatregoers by featuring Paul McCartney in the film's sequel alongside Elton John and Garth Brooks.
"We're making a sequel," Reiner said. "We're gonna start shooting at the end of February. And everybody's back. And Paul McCartney is joining us, and Elton John, and a few other surprises – Garth Brooks." Spinal Tap II will see Michael McKean reprise his role as band frontman David St. Hubbins, Christopher Guest as guitarist Nigel Tufnel, and Harry Shearer as bassist Derek Smalls while Reiner himself will reprise the role of documentarian Marty DiBergi.
There is no set release date for the forthcoming sequel of Spinal Tap, but it is set to coincide with the original film's 40th anniversary.
