Olivia Rodrigo addresses rumours that "Vampire" is about Taylor Swift
In an interview with The Guardian, Olivia Rodrigo confessed her surprise at fans who associated her recent single, “Vampire”, with Taylor Swift.
When Rodrigo released the single, "Vampire", earlier this year as the lead single from her forthcoming second album, GUTS, which discusses an older person taking advantage of her, fans began speculating that the song was written about Taylor Swift.
Swift and Rodrigo's friendship publicly appeared to cool off, following the release of Rodrigo's 2021 album, SOUR. Its release was plagued by copyright issues from other artists including Jack Antonoff, St Vincent, and Swift, who was eventually named as a co-writer on “Deja Vu” due to its similarities to her own hit, “Cruel Summer.” She also gave writing credits to Swift and Antonoff on “1 step forward, 3 steps back” before the album's release for including an interpolation of Swift’s “New Year’s Day”.
Rodrigo also had to share half of the credits and royalties for the song “Good 4 U” to Paramore after fans pointed out similarities to the band's hit “Misery Business".
Fans believed the final nail in the coffin was Swift inviting Sabrina Carpenter as an opener on The Eras Tour. Carpenter is rumoured to be “that blonde girl” who Rodrigo references in her song, “Driver's License, which is about her ex-boyfriend Joshua Bassett.
“I mean, I never want to say who any of my songs are about. I’ve never done that before in my career and probably won’t. I think it’s better to not pigeonhole a song to being about this one thing," she said when directly asked about the meaning behind the song, before adding, “I was very surprised when people thought that.”
Olivia Rodrigo's second album, GUTS, arrives on 8 September via Geffen Records.
