Odetta Hartman signs to Transgressive Records and announces forthcoming album, Swansongs
New York singer-songwriter Odetta Hartman has signed with Transgressive Records to release her second album Swansongs. The announcement coincides with new single, "Dr. No".
“Dr. No” is accompanied by a video directed by Bao Ngo. On the new track she says, “As the first song written for the new album, Dr. No helped to distill recurring themes of shadow play, evil twins, and monstrous myths for further exploration throughout the record. A basement blues inspired by “St James Infirmary” second lines; a doomsday dirge delivered from Victorian gothic tropes; a raucous requiem for lovers lost and former selves. Birthed in a boiler room with touring partner, Freedom, we developed a sonic world to spook imaginations and rattle speakers across the world.”
Swansongs was constrained by the unique circumstances of modern isolation. As such Odetta and her co-producers – Alex Friedman and Wyatt Bertz – production style was mitigated by the digital interface of remote collaboration. Synthesisers worked overtime to translate plunky banjos into lush wooden textures and shape white noise transitions into ASMR delights.
The forthcoming second album follows 222 – her debut mini-LP – and 2018’s Old Rockhounds Never Die.
"Dr. No" is out now. Swansongs, is set for release on 22 March via Transgressive Records, and is available to pre-order.
