Netflix has shared the first trailer for its new documentary Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop. The film features artists such as Queen Latifah, Sha-Rock, Roxanne Shante, MC Lyte, Remy Ma, Yo-Yo, Da Brat, Rah Digga, Coi Leray, Bahamadia, Tierra Whack, Latto, Monie Love, Kash Doll, Saweetie, Rapsody, Chika, and more.

The forthcoming film will highlight the contributions and achievements of the women who have made their mark on hip-hop over the past 50 years. Over the course of four episodes, viewers will be introduced to the women who helped pave the way for new generations of female hip-hop artists.

“By giving flowers to originators like Sha-Rock and Roxanne Shante or hearing real talk from contemporary superstars like Saweetie and Coi Leray, Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop contextualises the history of the music that changed the world within the wider social, racial, and political landscape of the times and, crucially, through a female lens," reads the official press release.

Fans have noticed that Nicki Minaj isn't included in the film despite having such an impact on the hip-hop industry, with one fan saying: "We really got to sit down and talk, why do they keep excluding Nicki Minaj from these topics like she isn’t the most successful female rapper of all time. They’re literally tryna wipe her from the history books due to personal vendettas".

According to the director, both Nicki Minaj and Missy Eliot both denied giving Netflix the right to license their music and videos. It is reported that Minaj is set to release her own documentary.

Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop will debut on 9 August and be available to stream exclusively on Netflix.
