Missy Elliott donates $50,000 to families in Virginia on second annual "Missy Elliott Day"
On the second annual “Missy Elliott Day” in her hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia, Missy Elliott celebrated the occasion by paying $50,000 in past-due rent for 26 families.
As reported by The Virginian-Pilot, Missy Elliott personally delivered the check to Portsmouth’s Dr. O. Marriner Family Life Center at Grove Church to give $50,000 to the Redevelopment and Housing Authority. The money will help 26 families clear their debts in past-due rent feeds.
The inaugural Missy Elliot Day saw the Commonwealth of Virginia committee, and Portsmouth, rename a portion of McClean street after her.
In a brief speech, during the event this month, Elliott said: “Instead of it being a celebration of Missy Elliott, you know about me, I wanted to give back and let that be the celebration of Missy Elliott, just to show that I love everybody out here. Just know that P-town is with me no matter where I go,” she added. “I love my city. I love my state. I love everything about it. Everything about Missy comes from here — the hospitality, the humility, the confidence — if you mess with me, it’s a problem. We sweet, but don’t try us
