Matty Healy deactivates socials after Lucy Dacus dismisses ableist remark
In the wake of yet another controversial incident, Matty Healy has deactivated his X (Twitter) account as a result of a failed interaction with Lucy Dacus.
Yesterday evening, Healy took to his X (Twitter) account to post another out-of-hand comment. The tweet was in relation to Lucy Dacus' supergroup, Boygenius.
“I told Lucy Dacus that ‘Boygenius’ had inspired me and [The 1975 drummer] George [Daniel] to start a new band called ‘Girlretard’. I don’t really hear from her that often," he wrote, seemingly not understanding why he would face backlash from the use of an ableist slur, or simply choosing to say it anyway.
In response, Dacus replied: “You don’t hear from me at all.” Healy then subtweeted the incident in a separate tweet, saying: “Yeah this never goes well does it,” before deactivating his account.

Healy often collaborates with Phoebe Bridgers – Dacus' Boygenius bandmate – but the two previously shared a stage in 2022 at Jack Antonoff’s Ally Coalition benefit concert alongside Bridgers, Weyes Blood, and Trey Anastasio.
This incident is just one of a string that have plagued him this year. Recently, himself and The 1975 were banned from Malaysia after he tried to protest their anti-LGBTQ+ laws by kissing his bandmate Ross MacDonald on stage.
Rina Sawayama publicly called him out during her Glastonbury set for racist remarks made on The Adam Friedland Show podcast, and again for his lack of accountability at NOS Alive Festival. Healy also deactivated his verified Twitter account in 2020 after tweeting a message of support for Black Lives Matter while simultaneously promoting one of The 1975's songs.
