Matt Corby covers TLC's "No Scrubs"
Matt Corby is the latest act to take part in triple j's Like A Version series, and played a cover of TLC's "No Scrubs".
In a recent string of promo for his latest album, Everything's Fine, Matt Corby appeared on triple j's Like A Version for the third time – first in 2012 with a cover of The Black Keys' "Lonely Boy", and again in 2016 to perform Tina Arena's "Chains".
Alongside a performance of "Reelin'" – the first single from his third studio album – he decided to cover TLC's 1999 classic "No Scrubs".
Speaking of his decision to take on the TLC song, Corby says: "I really love this song and that's my only reason for real!" I think it's a '90s classic. "I'm pretty sure me and my sister bought it as a single. You can imagine what a nine year old in year four would be doing – fucking nothing but listening to "No Scrubs". It was one of the first songs where I remembered the lyrics. It was such an iconic song, lyrically, and it was actually kind of funny. It's almost like an OG meme song – pre-meme-meme."
As the song was too high for his voice in the original key, he decided to use the chords that were involved in the first song he wrote with Budjerah: "I wanted to find an interesting way to move the chords around... I basically just superimposed 'No Scrubs' onto the chords to "Missing You" from Budjerah."
