Marika Hackman announces her first album in four years, Big Sigh
Singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Marika Hackman has unveiled details of her fourth studio album, Big Sigh, and shares the brand new single "Hanging".
"Hanging" is a a track that processes the end of a relationship in a delicate, dissociative daze, until its engulfing ending in a crash of banshee wails and grunge guitars.
Speaking on the single, Hackman says: “Hanging is reflecting on a difficult past relationship and how you can trap yourself in a situation where you’re unable to grow into the next stage of your life. The line ‘yeah you were a part of me, i'm so relieved it hurts’ is describing how painful it still is to break up even if it's not right.”
Last month Marika surprised fans with the release of single "No Caffeine" which she toasted with a one-off, intimate show at the ICA that sold out in minutes.
Big Sigh follows on from Any Human Friend which was met with rave reception upon its release in 2019. Hackman not only played every instrument save for the brass and strings on the forthcoming release, but she produced it too, along with Sam Petts-Davies (Thom Yorke, Warpaint) and long-term collaborator Charlie Andrew.
“I’d always produced on my records, but I'd never backed myself enough to actually say that I had. I liked being a sponge and I saw the first two thirds of my career as a learning experience - I would sit back in a slightly deferential position to allow the dynamic to work. With this album I got to a point where I realised I’d done the learning, I knew what to do," Hackman reveals.
In celebration of the album, Marika Hackman is set to tour the UK and EU in 2024. Kicking off in Glasgow on 12 March, the UK leg culminates at Hackney Church on 21 March and continues in Brussels on 8 April before ending on 15 April in Paris.
