Mariah Carey's Queen of Christmas trademark request has been denied

Mariah Carey has had her trademark request for the title Queen of Christmas denied after her company didn't respond to Elizabeth Chan's legal challenge against the trademark attempt.

As BBC reports, Carey's Lotion LLC applied to trademark Queen of Christmas in 2021, but it's since been turned down following a legal challenge filed by Elizabeth Chan in August, who was named the Queen of Christmas by The New Yorker in 2018 due to releasing an original festive song every year for a decade.

Carey's company failed to respond to Chan's opposition to the trademark, leading to the request being denied by the US Patent and Trademark Office. Carey also had trademark applications for the abbreviation "QOC " and "Princess Christmas" denied.

Back in August, Chan spoke to Variety about Carey's attempt to trademark the phrase, saying, "I feel very strongly that no one person should hold onto anything around Christmas or monopolise it in the way that Mariah seeks to in perpetuity."

Chan added, "That's just not the right thing to do. Christmas is for everyone. It's meant to be shared; it's not meant to be owned."

A CBS special from Mariah Carey titled Merry Christmas To All will air on 20 December.
