Mariah Carey on releasing her shelved grunge album: "I’m so mad I haven’t done that yet"
Speaking to Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang during a recent episode of the duo’s Las Culturistas podcast, Mariah delved into her back catalogue and discussed some of her favourite releases.
In 2020, Carey revealed in her The Meaning Of Mariah Carey memoir that in 1995, whilst working on her fifth studio album, Daydream, Mariah Carey and her band worked on an alt-rock album in order to "blow off some steam". The project, Someone's Ugly Daughter, was released under the pseudonym Chick, and featured lead vocals from her friend Clarissa Dane.
Speaking to Rolling Stone in 2020, she revealed that she had found the original version of the album which featured herself on lead vocals, and that she planned on releasing it one day. “I think this unearthed version will become something that, yes, we should hear,” she said at the time. “But also, I’m working on a version of something where there’ll be another artist working on this with me as well... Possibly something built around the album. I’m just full of surprises.”
Speaking to the hosts about the shelved project, Carey said: “I’m so mad I haven’t done that yet. It’s a good album." Asked whether she thought it was worth releasing, she added: "You will hear it. I was getting life from that, seriously. It was jokes, as well. They’re everlasting.”
