M People's Mike Pickering on Liz Truss using their song at conference: "I don't want my song being a soundtrack to lies"
M People founder Mike Pickering has hit out at Liz Truss walking out at a conference to their "Moving on Up" hit, saying he doesn't "want my song being a soundtrack to lies."
Earlier today (5 October) UK Prime Minister Liz Truss walked out to M People's 1993 hit "Moving on Up" at the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham, and M People's own Mike Pickering has shared his disapproval of the song use on Twitter. "So apparently we can't stop Truss walking out to our song, very weird," Pickering wrote. "So sad it got used by this shower of a government. BTW Truss labour used it with permission in 90's. I don't want my song being a soundtrack to lies."

People on Twitter have also been highlighting the song lyrics, which includes "You've done me wrong, your time is up / You took a sip from the devil's cup," and the fact that M People's lead singer Heather Small’s son is a Labour councillor. M People's Pickering added, "I sincerely hope she listens to the lyrics."

Liz Truss hasn’t twigged the fact that “Moving on Up” by M People is about a breakup

Although,
You’ve done me wrong, your time is up,
You took a sip from the devils cup.
You broke my heart, there’s no way back,
Move right out of here, baby, go in pack your bags…
Sounds perfect!
