Watch Lúpína perform live in session for Best Fit in Smekkleysa records in Reykjavík

Ahead of her US shows this month at SXSW and New Colossus, we’re dropping a session filmed at the Sugarcubes-founded record store Smekkleysa during Iceland Airwaves last year with rising uber-talented Nína Solveig Andersen - better known as lúpina.

Under the name Luípina, Oslo-based Andersen kicked off her solo career in 2022 after releasing two records with experimental folk trio Dymbrá. The 21-year-old half-Norwegian, half-Icelandic songwriter and producer wrote most of her 2023 debut album ringluð as part of a school project and followed up with her second album marglytta back in the autumn last year. The record blends complex layers of synths, soundscapes and captivating lyrics, fusing the electronic with a pop sensibility.

On the closing day of Airwaves back in November last year, we met up with Andersen at Smekkleysa to cut a jawdropping take of album standout "Ein á báti”, with a little help from our friends at Iceland Music.

"'Ein á báti' is a song i wrote to sum up some different thoughts and topics from the different songs of my album MARGLYTTA," Nina tells us. "The album goes through a rollercoaster of emotions, everything from love to environmental anxiety to loneliness and disappointment. It's a reminder for myself that at the end of the day I stand on my own feet and need to trust in myself through everything good and bad in this life, and as a woman in the creative industry."

Iceland Music's Record in Iceland reimbursement scheme gives anyone who records their music in Iceland a 25% refund on all recording costs incurred in the country. All you need to do is submit the total cost related to your recording – including travel, accommodation, wages and even post-production like mixing and mastering. The refund will go through in the following quarter. It’s that easy – and makes Iceland the smart and easy choice for anyone wanting to find an inspiring location to record their next album.

Lúpína will perform at New Colossus festival in New York tonight (6 March) and on Friday (8 March) before heading to SXSW for shows at Shangri-La (11 and 12 March) and W Austin (13 March).
