Lil Uzi Vert joins Paramore on stage for "Misery Business"

On the final night of their two sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden, 31 May, Paramore invited Lil Uzi Vert to the stage to perform "Misery Business".

After receiving backlash in 2018 about the anti-feminist lyrics, Hayley Williams put the song "Misery Business" into retirement, but in 2020, during their first show in four years, the band had decided to bring the song back into their set.

Before playing the song, Hayley Williams told the crowd, "Four years ago, we said we were gonna retire this song for a little while, and I guess technically we did. But what we did not know was that just about five minutes after I got cancelled for saying the word 'whore' in a song, all of TikTok decided that it was ok. Make it make sense."

Longtime fans of Paramore know that "Misery Business" is a special moment of Paramore live shows, because they often bring fans onto the stage to sing the bridge, and final chorus. At Austin City Limits, last year, Paramore gave PinkPantheress the honour, and last night, at Madison Square Garden, Lil Uzi Vert was the choice of duet.

“We've been talking for a minute, but this is the first time we’ve met in person," Williams said to Lil Uzi Vert. “You’ve said too many nice things about me. You are so sweet to me and to Paramore, so can we do this bridge again together? And then we’re gonna melt their faces off!”

Lil Uzi Vert has been a fan of Paramore for an incredibly long time. A video of them from 2017 is doing the rounds again, after last night's performance. They have also mentioned that their dream collaboration would be with Hayley Williams, but she addressed the idea of collaborating with them in an interview with Zane Lowe, saying; "I remember, too, Uzi asking me to do some stuff with him, and I know that fans are going to be so pissed at me for saying this, but I literally wrote him back on Instagram and I was like, ‘Buddy, I love you so much, but I don’t want to be that famous'."

David Byrne of Talking Heads was also spotted at the Madison Square Garden show, and during the final song, "This Is Why", Paramore invited support acts Genesis Owusu to the stage, alongside their friends, Elke, Becca Mancari, and Williams' business partner and hairstylist Brian O'Connor.

Paramore's sixth studio album, This Is Why, is out now.
