Wiley refuses to give back £15,000 fee to Cockrock Festival following 15 minute set
Wiley has spoken out about his recent walk-off at Cumbria’s Cockermouth Rock festival, saying that he won’t be giving his performance fee back voluntarily.
The festival organisers are seeking legal advice following the incident in which Wiley only played for 15 minutes of his allotted 45 minute set.
Speaking to BBC Newsbeat, Wiley has said: “They say it’s a charity event and they want their money back. I’ve just stood on stage and been coined and bottled. Obviously I’m not giving the money back.”
He continued: ”When I went on I knew some people were going to be unhappy. The escalation on Twitter is uncontrollable. The woman who was looking after us said if it gets too much, come off. After 15 minutes I looked at the floor and it was covered in coins. Any one of those coins could have taken my eye out.”
The grime MC, known for his hatred of weekenders on farms, was booed off stage after preceding the set with a series of antagonising tweets about not wanting to be there. After being pelted with beer cans, Wiley thought enough was enough and headed off early.
Cockrock Festival, however, now feel they didn’t get value for money – reportedly having paid him £1000 up front for every minute he actually played.
Festival organizer Marie Whitehead previously released the following statement on the matter:
“We are dealing with 250 contracts for the event, so I’m not sure what the position is but we will be getting legal advice on what happened. It is very disappointing as it would appear he did not fulfil his contract and was supposed to play for 45 minutes.”
