Weezer announce their White Album, share new track "King Of The World"
Ever wanted to be "King Of The World" for a day? If you've got a spare $25,000 lying around then now just might be your chance - thanks to Weezer who today announce their White Album.
After a cryptic week which has seen the band white out all social network profiles and send messages teasing their fan club, Weezer have finally detailed their self-titled tenth album - altertatively known as the White Album.
The ten-track record, co-produced with Jake Sinclair and featuring recently released singles "Do You Wanna Get High?" and "Thank God For Girls", will be released on April Fool's Day. The band have also shared a new cut from the album, "King Of The World", complete with video of a royal leader getting intoxicated and wreaking havoc near a beach.
The album is available for pre-order now - including as part of an Experience Bundle. For only $25,000 (plus fees) the lucky purchaser will be named "King Of The World" for a day. Other perks of this bundle include a Greyhound to the Galapagos with frontman Rivers Cuomo, a bird watching expedition to locate the elusive white-cheeked pintail, a catamaran ride to Charles Darwin Research Station, the experience of singing "The British Are Coming" with Cuomo (replacing every lyric about "old King George" to "lonesome George"), and a signed copy of the album, of course. Full details of that can be found here.
"The inspiration behind the songs were my experiences hanging around the Westside of Los Angeles, which has been our home since Weezer began," Cuomo says of the album. "Hanging out with people in Venice and Santa Monica, the beach, the Hare Krishnas, the Sikh on roller blades with the guitar, girls on Tinder within a four mile radius, seeing other bands, the kids from La Sera. I would just tweet out 'does anybody wanna hang?' and then I'd get together with people who responded and talk about life. I love California. I wanted the album to make you feel like you were there with us SoCal weirdos even if you're in Milwaukee in December."
"Obviously my favorite band has always been the Beach Boys," he continues of the record's inspirations, "and what I love about them most are the melodies and the chord progressions. I guess the harmonies too. And the orchestration. Can't forget about the lyrics. So basically everything. I wanted to get that kind of vibe: beautiful tunes and sweet lyrics. I also love the dark side of the beach – Venice after dark, hearing at the Del Monte Speakeasy about how the gangsters used to drag the bodies through the catacombs and leave them under the pier."
As for hints of what we've got to look forwards to? "I'm proud of the demented lyrics that are like, 'What? Who says that? Who thinks that? What planet on am I on? I don't know, but I kinda wanna stay!' Welcome to our planet, people! After twenty four years, we still love being in this band and we wanna keep it going for at least another fourteen years."
If that's not enough, Weezer have announced a string of shows in Manchester, London, and Amsterdam in April, and a co-headline US tour with Panic! At The Disco this summer.
