Taken from her latest full length offering Conatus, (out now on Souterrain Transmissions) Zola Jesus’ austere, powerful number ‘Vessel’ has been given a brand new video. As dramatic as we have come to expect from the young, classically trained singer, the footage was filmed in the New Mexican desert and was directed by Jacqueline Castel. Inspired by the Sphinx moth, whose natural habitat is the desert, Castel explains her vision in more depth than we ever could:
“In Vessel, science fiction, wave phenomena, and the abstracted metamorphosis of the moth life cycle are visually manifested in the surreal landscapes of underground mineral caves and icy, remote dunes. Themes of duality and transformation weave throughout, with Nika’s own voice revealed as vibrational patterns in water through the microscopic observation of Cymatics.”
Zola Jesus has a few UK dates lined up for this winter with EMA.
