Watch of Montreal perform "Young Champion" as Hammer Throw for faux-'80s film Ping Pong Summer
Ping Pong Summer is about a thirteen-year-old boy named Rad Miracle. A lover of hip-hop and ping pong, Rad’s summer vacation finds him the opportunity for new friendships and young love, but it’s also met with bullying and the inevitable need for an invigorating training montage. In comes of Montreal, who have absorbed a new identity as hair-metal band Hammer Throw in a new music video for their motivational power ballad “Young Champion.”
The video features of Montreal-frontman Kevin Barnes sporting a red Adidas tracksuit and perhaps the greatest, blondest, curliest wig of all time as he sings emphatically and makes lots of clenched-fist arm movements. The song features a falsetto-intro, a gut-busting high-register guitar solo and a motivational chorus that we’d all be wise to take to heart:
Young champion, your heart is racing with the lions, but your rival is still dancing on the night’s edge.
