Watch Morrissey's debut solo show from 1988 with Smiths members Rourke and Joyce
Complete concert footage has emerged of Morrissey’s first ever solo show, which took place at Wolverhampton Civic Hall on 22 December 1988 and was free to anyone who wore a Smiths or Moz t-shirt.
His former band, The Smiths had recently split up the year prior and Morrissey called upon his former bandmates Mike Joyce, Andy Rourke and Craig Gannon (no Johnny Marr, of course) to accompany him as part of the live set-up on the night. The setlist consisted largely of tracks featured on the singer’s debut LP Viva Hate, which had been released in the March prior, with ‘Suedehead’ among them.
“It was nice to be kissed repeatedly. In the hall that night there was a great aura of love & gentleness,” Morrissey later said of the show that included many a stage invasion.
