Watch Kanye West's interview with Zane Lowe for BBC Radio 1
Kanye West took to BBC Radio 1 on Monday night for perhaps the interview of his career, speaking to Zane Lowe for a hour, reeling off his ever outspoken opinions on music, himself, art, fashion, design and culture generally.
Going from discussing his new album, Yeezus, to namedropping Anna Wintour and saying he hangs out with architects “constantly”, it was definitely not to be missed. Luckily, Radio 1 have put up the entire video interview online in four parts.
Below are some choice quotes from the gem-filled transcription.
Kanye on perfection:
” can be considered perfect, but that’s not what I’m here to do. I’m here to crack the pavement.”
Kanye on being a multi-medium artist:
“I’m a product person, and not just music. I wanna do architecture and clothing and water bottle design.”
Kanye on freedom:
“You drive in a Maybach past a homeless person and you ask, who’s more free?”
Kanye on the future:
“I’ve reached a time in my life when my Truman Show boat has hit the painting. I got to a point Michael Jackson did not break down. I have reached the glass ceiling.”
Kanye on Kanye:
“People think my motivation is very megalomaniac and self-motivated. To the contrary, I just want to help.”
Kanye on his legacy:
“I brought 10 years of product that’s added to humanity. Where’s the culture at? Rap is the new rock and roll, we bring culture, we the real rock stars. And I’m the biggest of all of them.”
Kanye on you:
“If you’re a Kanye West fan, you’re a fan of yourself.”
