Watch Eleanor Friedberger, Joanna Gruesome & more in new Pitchfork documentary
Pitchfork recently hosted a showcase at New York music marathon CMJ with the likes of Eleanor Friedberger, Joanna Gruesome, Speedy Ortiz, Priests, Perfect Pussy and more heading the bill. Now, they’ve released a short film documenting the event.
The acts discuss a range of topics, including their early beginnings in making music, identity and the difficulties of being a female in the modern music industry.
“Most of the line-ups we play on, the other bands just have guys in them,” Joanna Gruesome’s Alanna McArdle told Pitchfork. “That’s not something that I am normally too aware of, but then I have to remind myself that it’s kind of weird.”
“While I get that people could be wary of a curator making something an all-girl thing, I think it’s sometimes necessary to do so or nothing will change. I hope there’ll be more shows that it just so happens that all the bands have female members. But this may be the first show we’ve played that that’s ever happened.”
