Vaccines bassist Árni debuts new solo material
Vaccines bassist Árni Árnason has revealed two solo tracks he describes as "depresso tropicana".
"Bore You With My Melody" and "New M.O. (U.F.O.)" are streaming now over on Soundcloud and reveal a very different sound to his other band. "Bore You With My Melody" showcases a gutteral, analog muzak vibe while "New M.O. (U.F.O.)" revels in a poingant psych-fuzz.
Going just by his first name, Árnason tells us, "calling myself anything else would imply a project and a 'project' implies a finishing line of some description."
"I have no plan in mind. To me it's an outlet, not a project. I guess it's a bit of kneejerk reaction to having to tailor my musical output to imposed timelines etc, but I intend to make this as amateurish as possible. I'll release music if and when I want to in whatever way I feel appropriate at that time. There might be a bunch more, or this could be the only thing I'll ever do, but by just calling it Árni it relieves me of the responsibility of having to construct an image or a strategy. I guess it's as honest as it could be."
Material for the new 'outlet' was written at the beginning of the year. Árnason explains that "their End Of The Pier/Depresso Tropicana/Muzak vibe lent itself very naturally to both my annoying nasal baritone and my junkyard of a studio full of off-brand organs and 80s synths."
Árni makes his live debut later this month at Popular Culture, the new monthly clubnight from Rockfeedback, with former Vaccines drummer Pete Robertson and Babyshambles bassist Drew McConnell set to play alongside him.
