Unsigned grime artist Stormzy is third in the BBC Sound Of 2015 poll

Grime upstart Stormzy has snagged third place in the BBC Sound Of 2015 poll.

Stormzy, real name Michael Omari, hails from Croydon and is pushing grime's gritty boundaries, rising to prominence for his immense talent on the mic, a nod from Wiley, and spots on Radio 1Xtra. He was also the first ever unsigned rapper on Later... With Jools Holland.

Speaking about his podium-placing, Omari said to the BBC: "That's a bit of an overachievement for me, I can't lie. Especially being an unsigned act and an MC, it's overwhelming."

Continuing, he told of his decision to pursue music as a career.

"I've always been doing music but I've been so inconsistent. So the first time was November 2013, when I dropped a video called "Where You Been" and started my campaign. While I was doing that, I was actually working on an oil refinery, in quality assurance. It was quite a niche job, so they had to train me up for 10 months. It got to March, April and the music was picking up, so I had to make the decision - project engineer or musician? I decided to take the music path and here we are."

Stormzy is currently unsigned, but admits that there's been a "lot of interest".

George The Poet was announced Monday as the fifth-placed artist on the Sound Of 2015 poll. Raury was revealed yesterday (6 January) as the fourth.
