Tunng announce new album and podcast series with lead single "A Million Colours"
Tunng have announced their new project DEAD CLUB, which consists of a podcast series, a zine and an album, and they've released "A Million Colours" as the lead single.
"A Million Colours" is the first glimpse of Tunng's forthcoming album DEAD CLUB, and marks their first new release since their 2019 LP This Is Tunng… Magpie Bites and Other Cuts.
Tunng's forthcoming project will, according to their Twitter, explore "our culture's relationship to death, dying and grief". Mike Lindsay of Tunng says of DEAD CLUB, "It’s not just a record, it’s a discussion, it’s a podcast series, it’s poetry, it’s short stories, it’s an examination."
DEAD CLUB was inspired by lyricist Sam Genders after he found Max Porter’s novel Grief is The Thing with Feathers and passed it around the group, resulting in the band discussing the subject thoroughly. Genders says, "When all those things come together that’s what makes it Tunng, and because the subject of death is so powerful for people in different ways, we talked about the kinds of issues it might bring up, that we might need to be sensitive about."
Lindsay adds of the LP, "Trying to turn this whole concept into an album, into music, without it being too sombre and difficult for people to listen to, that’s been the challenge. We wanted it to be colourful and we wanted it to be kind of uplifting. Although some of it's a lot darker than I was imagining it originally, I think it’s a thought-provoking and emotional journey; it doesn’t make me feel sad."
The project will also include a podcast series that kicks off on 1 September. The series will be hosted by Tunng members Becky Jacobs and Sam Genders, who will discuss death with a variety of philosophers, scientists, frontline workers and more. A trailer is available to stream on Spotify now.
