Troye Sivan to star in The Weeknd's upcoming HBO series The Idol
HBO has officially green-lit The Weeknd's forthcoming series The Idol, and some new cast members have been announced including Troye Sivan and TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe.
Back in June it was revealed that The Weeknd, real name Abel Tesfaye, would co-create and star in a new series titled The Idol, and now HBO has officially picked up the series, as well as announcing some new cast members.

The series, which will be co-written and co-created by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and Reza Fahim, will star The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp as well as new additions Troye Sivan, TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe, Anne Heche, Suzanna Son, Melanie Liburd, Steve Zissis, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, and Nico Hiraga.
Variety reports that Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO Programming said, "When the multi-talented Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye, Reza Fahim and Sam Levinson brought us The Idol, it was clear their subversive, revelatory take on the cult of the music industry was unlike anything HBO had ever done before. Shortly after, the brilliant duo of Joe Epstein and Amy Seimetz joined forces with the rest of the team, and this dream became a reality."
The Idol will follow a female pop singer who gets romantically involved with an LA club owner who is also the leader of a secret cult.
Tesfaye's appearance in The Idol will be his first acting role since last year's appearance on an episode of American Dad. In 2019, Tesfaye also appeared in Josh and Benny Safdie's Uncut Gems with Adam Sandler.
