Tomberlin previews new album with third single "tap"
Tomberlin has unveiled new single "tap" as the third taster of her upcoming second album i don’t know who needs to hear this….
"tap" is accompanied by self-directed video, and will feature on Tomberlin's second album alongside February's "happy accident" and January's "idkwntht".
Sarah Beth Tomberlin says of the new release, "It was January 2021, my first pandemic winter in New York, when I wrote this song. I was investigating the things that help in connecting me to myself. I was taking a lot of big 10, sometimes 14 mile walks through the city trying to find my center, while also trying to get ideas and inspiration flowing. It was quite a lonely, uninspiring time and lots of disconnection, so on my walks I tended to observe parts of city life that people were lacking in or sometimes risking for connection. This song shifts through scenes of what does connect and disconnect me from myself. It’s funny because I think releasing music to be consumed by the public does both very strongly for me."
i don’t know who needs to hear this… will follow Tomberlin's 2018 debut album At Weddings. Tomberlin says of the album, "The theme of the record is to examine, hold space, make an altar for the feelings."
The new album was recorded at Figure 8 studios in Brooklyn over the course of two weeks, and is produced by Phil Weinrobe.
"My first record, I made it without knowing I was making it," Tomberlin explains. "I was writing songs to process stuff from my personal life as it was happening, and then suddenly everything was happening really fast. Record label, tour, press, all this momentum and a lot of advice about my career, which, you know, I never even expected to have. So I think when I started to write the second record, I felt a lot of pressure to make it sound collected and profound, almost like a book - chapters, a narrative, everything nicely wrapped up."
