New research in Belgium shows that wide-scale hearing loss is becoming common among young people.
The study, conducted by Annick Gilles and the University Hospital of Antwerp, finds that 85% of people aged 14 to 25 suffer from what is deemed “temporary tinnitus”, while 15% have symptoms of “permanent tinnitus”.
“We are seeing a serious worsening of symptoms in the last twenty years,” Gilles says of the findings. “Many young people are aware of the risks of noise, but are not protecting their hearing regardless.”
Tinnitus Awareness Week takes place every February. Read an article on the issue here.
