There's an all-female Weezer tribute act called "Sheezer"
Forget about Yeezus and Sheezus, perhaps the best music pun of recent times comes in the form of this Toronto-based all-female tribute act to Weezer, aptly called Sheezer.
The band formed in 2009 and feature members of The Hidden Cameras and other Ontario-based outfits. They cover the Blue Album and Pinkerton only and recently spoke to Noisey about their decision to form the group. “When I got into the albums, I was on Myspace a lot,” said the band’s Robin Hatch. “It was a couple years after the album came out, but Rivers Cuomo had a Myspace, and he was like this Nicholas Cage–type figure to me and my friends on Myspace back in the day. We thought it was funny that he was on this social networking website and would read your messages but not respond to them, because you could see he had done that.”
They also discuss the disparity of them singing what they deem “beta male” lyrics. “It’s more the nerdier, more sensitive dude that would tend to get into Weezer,” The Bicycles’ Dana Snell added. “But that’s a tension within Weezer itself. Nerdy, neurotic guy and then metal-influenced rock. So yeah, that’s still there, and maybe there’s another layer now.”
Sheezer play Toronto’s Lee’s Palace on 30 May.
