The Vaccines' Freddie Cowan launches new menswear brand Basic Rights
Freddie Cowan, guitarist in The Vaccines, has launched his own clothing brand Basic Rights.
Cowan and stylist Brianna Lance (former head designer for Reformation) have founded Basic Rights in partnership with David Chambers (a Savile Row tailor).
Speaking about the brand's aims, Lance says:
“The idea is to offer simple pieces that you can build a wardrobe out of, and then if you want to add in some crazy vintage jacket that you found or a super-colorful piece, you can...
“We take a lot of musicians as inspiration. We couldn’t find a lot of the pieces. We couldn’t find a trouser that wasn’t going to rip on them while they were playing in it or a T-shirt that you could sweat in and feel fine, or even the right cuts. We had to go to vintage stores and so many new brands to piece together the look so we’ve decided to create a line ourselves that is the right look.
"The most iconic, classic version of everything is kind of what we were looking at, so when we did a trouser, we looked at tons of pictures of Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Ian Curtis from Joy Division - of all these super-iconic male figures - and focused on what kind of trousers they were wearing. The same went for the jeans, jackets, and T-shirts. We were just trying to find the most classic version of something that still had an element of coolness to it.”
Basic Rights launched today, with items priced from $50 to $500.
