The Rhythm Method

The Rhythm Method are "entering exciting territory" with their new music

02 January 2018, 09:43 | Written by Laurence Day

We chat with up-and-coming duo The Rhythm Method as they prepare to kickstart a busy 2018 by playing our new music festival, The Five Day Forecast.

The London-based twosome's sound ducks and weaves to avoid direct comparisons - although there's something eminently familiar about their Mike Skinner-style flow and classic soul tangents in tracks such as "Something For The Weekend". It's a totally scattershot selection of odds and ends that gels in the moment with impressive results.

The Rhythm Method's music is incredibly English too in many ways - even if they weren't namechecking things like Radcliffe and Maconie or Cherie Blair the signs are there - and they manage to get that across without being decked out in the cross of St. George or banging on about immigration levels. It's quite refreshing to have that sincerity about modern British/English life. Tongues are firmly in cheek, obviously, but The Rhythm Method aren't hitching their wagon to the typical self-deprecating nature of British wit. They're open, honest, and hopeful, and they have the confidence not to defer to snark. It's a tricky tightrope to tread. Although it might be difficult for some to reconcile being English and being patriotic in this day and age, The Rhythm Method offer an exciting appreciation of the quirky and the mundane on these shores - and they wrap it up in a gorgeously smooth pop gown.

BESTFIT: Could you introduce yourselves for us please?
The Rhythm Method: "We are the Rhythm Method, but our friends call us Joey and Rowan."

What do you try to do with your music and how do you achieve this?
TRM: "We're trying to fill the void that we feel ourselves in music. We want to be entertained and we wanna hear something that sounds like us. The band started very much as 'why don't we give that a go then?' Right now it feels like there's just the serious Mercury Prize music or massive chart stuff. We wanna bring back the cult middle. Why can't we have exciting pop music that also says something, however big or small?"

Can you tell us what musical and non-musical influences have shaped your sound?
TRM: "It's predominantly non-band influences we're interested in. Rowan's music is influenced by film soundtracks and TV themes for example. Joey's live performance is very influenced by his love of wrestling, 'the cosmic ballet' as he calls it. But mainly we just want to sound like ourselves, like normal life in London. Our favourite British bands like Prefab Sprout and The Style Council did that and that's probably why we've earned those comparisons."

What should people expect from your Five Day Forecast show?
TRM: "We've spent the latter bit of 2017 writing so we'll be road testing a few new songs. We're entering exciting territory, a wider sound, more guitars, a bit more Northern... as well as the old favourites and singalongs you might expect from one of our gigs."

What are you working on now/next?
TRM: "In our minds the first album is written, we just need to finish the recording and get it out. We don't wanna hang about. We feel it's a very complete snapshot of our lives and a fairly decent account of the best we can do."

How is 2018 shaping up? What are you looking forward to next year?
TRM: "We go out on tour with our friends Cabbage at the end of January. That's the most exciting thing, the opportunity to grow the movement and convert people across the country. This band is a grassroots thing. If you believe in us then we believe in you."

The Rhythm Method play our new music festival at The Lexington in London on 9 January with Art School Girlfriend and Suzi Wu. Tickets are available now.
