The National Gallery unveils ambitious ‘Soundscapes’ exhibition
This summer, the National Gallery will be offering a unique opportunity for visitors through their ‘Soundscapes’ exhibition. Combining art and sound, the exhibition has attracted contributions from leading sound artists and musicians.
Prestigious names, such as Nico Muhly, Gabriel Yared and Jamie xx, have been commissioned to produce a ‘soundscape’ to six paintings of their choice from the National Gallery. Each ‘soundscape’ has been created specifically for the exhibition, and can only be heard for the duration of the show.
The Sainsbury Wing is being taken over, with each musician given a soundproof room for their musical installation. The exhibition is the first of its type at the National Gallery.
Dr. Minna Moore Ede, Curator of the Soundscapes exhibition said:
“We are tremendously fortunate to have musicians and sound artists of this calibre creating completely new work for the National Gallery…. And it is incredibly exciting to see how they will metamorphose these great paintings into musical and sound form.”
The exhibition opens to the public on 8 July and will run until 6 September. For advance tickets visit the website.
