The National answer fans' questions for Reddit 'Ask Me Anything'
Reddit hosted an AMA (Ask Me Anything) webchat yesterday (8 May) with The National, which saw the Brooklyn band discuss everything from their upcoming new album Trouble Will Find Me to how onstage beverages affect their toilet breaks.
” as much as I should have. I was mostly worried about piss breaks,” singer Matt Berninger said of the group’s recent six hour long set at New York’s MoMA which saw them run through the same track, ‘Sorrow’, over and over again. “I think we are actually planning to release a 6 hour vinyl version of that performance for charity,” he added. “Seriously. Hope it happens.”
The band’s guitarist, Bryce Dessner went on to discuss his intention to do more movie work (“Aaron and I recently wrote music for a Kerouac biopic called ‘Big Sur’. We’d like to do more”), future plans to play with Arcade Fire again (“I saw Richard last night and we talked about it but I think maybe something special and not a tour would be the right idea”) and future offshoot releases coming from Trouble (“We actually recorded way too much music this time, and many songs which are just as strong as the ones on the record. Where in the past we might have made extended versions, this time around we have more material so I am not sure what the plan is but we definitely want to finish those songs”).
The webchat ended with the members discussing their mutual love of alt-rock kings, Pavement. “Matt and Scott are the real Pavement experts,” said Bryce. “I’m pretty sure I’m the one who got them to reform. You’re welcome!” Matt added.
The band’s upcoming new record will be released on 20 May. Watch footage from their recent MoMA performance below:
