The Garage venue in London's Highbury & Islington could be redeveloped
London's iconic music venue The Garage in Highbury & Islington is under threat following plans to redevelop the tube station.
In the Islington Gazette, a spokesperson for TFL has shared plans to redevelop Highbury & Islington tube station, making way for a new ticket office where The Garage is located.
“We are in early discussions about the possibility of upgrading Highbury and Islington Tube station and will engage with businesses and stakeholders as any plans are developed," the spokesperson explained.
The iconic music venue has hosted an incredible roster of bands, including the Arctic Monkeys, Blur, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack White, Harry Styles and many more, as well as hosting unsigned bands in their upstairs room.
Matthew Cook, a programmer at The Garage explained, “We believe we’re a site of local importance bringing a vibrant musical culture to Islington. With so many of London’s beloved music venues under threat from developers, we want to ensure the future of the Garage by strengthening ties with our local community.”
The 600 capacity venue will reach its 25th anniversary later this year.
Mystery Jets' vocalist, Blaine Harrison explained, “We played some of our most memorable early gigs there, attended by some of the people that gave us our first breaks in the industry. And yet in less than a year [since it was refurbished] it is already under threat from developers.”
