Unsigned competition winners The Burning Hell stoke the flames of revolution at End of the Road
End of the Road might not strike you as a hotbed of revolutionary activity, but after The Burning Hell's secret set on the Piano Stage this evening, one wonders if Special Branch might want to have a word.
A well-deserved winner of this year's "Unsigned Band" competition, the Canadian trio performed five of their literate, darkly humourous anti-folk numbers, covering subjects ranging from pet euthanasia to the relationship dramas of Maurice Sendak.
But it was their final song, an autobiographical retelling of how the band got together, that might have got alarm bells ringing down at GCHQ, with its rousing sing-along chorus "pass the wine, fuck the government, and I love you". Then again, even the most hard-hearted spook would have found it difficult to resist the charm of a band that some have already hailed the discovery of the weekend.
