Tame Impala's Kevin Parker says he "didn't really have time to be scared" of California wildfires
Kevin Parker of Tame Impala has revealed that he "didn't really have time to be scared" when evacuating Malibu last year during the California wildfires.
Just over a year ago, Parker posted on Tame Impala's Instagram, writing, "RIP to all this gear (and someone’s beautiful house) in Malibu. I made it out with my laptop and the Hofner. My heart breaks for the wildlife."
Last year's wildfires saw more than 80 people die in the worst wildfire season ever recorded in California.
In a new interview with BBC 6 Music's Lauren Laverne, Parker spoke of the wildfires that affected the recording of his forthcoming album The Slow Rush, "I didn't know whether to be scared or not," he said.
The Australian musician revealed the reason behind being in Malibu in the first place, "I like to do these trips that I just go on on my own. Out of the city, wherever, for a few days, just to record and not think about anything else. And one of them was in Malibu, and of course the bushfire came through."
Parker reveals that the idea of the building in Malibu burning down didn't hit him straight away, "I grabbed my laptop, it's funny because I didn't actually think the place was going to burn down, I thought I'd be coming back in a couple of hours."
He added, "I checked my phone and it said 'evacuation Malibu'. I thought they were just evacuating the whole area . I literally thought I'd be going back in a few hours."
Discussing what he took before evacuating, Parker said, "So I just grabbed my Hofner bass guitar which I've had for years. It's the only thing that was there that was sentimental - other than the music on my laptop - so I just grabbed both those things and headed out."
