Tame Impala's Cameron Avery announces solo album, shares lead single "Wasted On Fidelity"
Cameron Avery, bassist with Australian psych kings Tame Impala, has announced debut solo record Ripe Dreams, Pipe Dreams and shared new single "Wasted On Fidelity".
The multi-instrumentalist offers up classic pop vibes on the track, which dissects a failed relationship via sweeping strings and bone-dry wit.
"I wanted to make something that sounded like the old records I love - Johnny Hartman, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Sarah Vaughan, Etta James - the big band stuff with less metaphorical lyrics," Avery says of his inspirations. With vague country-flecked riffs and just a touch of his psychedelic background, it's an enticing twist on a golden formula.
"My mindset at the time was that the only way I could provide happiness for myself is if I paid for it," Avery adds. "The lyric says, ‘I gave myself to the sure things’; if I bought a beer, or a whiskey, or other such indulgences I got to consume them… but it’s kind of a dark mindset when you think about it: attempting to buy happiness."
The NYC-based former POND dummer self-produced his LP - it's heavily inspired by time he spent writing/recording in California.
