Talking trolls, elves, gods and monsters with Dream Wife's Rakel
Dream Wife drop their debut today and it's the first great record of 2018 from the most exciting live band in the UK right now.
For this week's Talk The Line podcast, we met up with Rakel Mjöll (pictured above, middle) the band's Icelandic-born singer. Mjöll was already a veteran of the Reykjavík music and arts scene before she formed Dream Wife with friends Alice and Bella. She's sung with bands such as Útidúr, Sykur and Halleluwah and comes from a highly creative family of that includes her uncle Ragnar Kjartansson — the famed performance artist.
As Mjöll tells us, Icelanders are incredibly protective and proud of their culture and past which is rich in tales of monsters, spirits, elves and trolls. This is shown through their passionate storytelling, which has occupied a central place in Icelandic history since the first settlers from Norway and the British Isles reached the island in the late 9th and early 10th century.
In our weekly podcast Talk the Line, we meet the people we love from music, film and television to find out about their passions and obsessions. A new episode drops every Friday - catch up with the episodes you've missed or subscribe via iTunes, Stitcher, Overcast or TuneIn.
