The visuals are just as important as the music for shadowy dream-pop group Swimming Girls
The world of Swimming Girls is still shrouded in mystery for most of us, but ahead of their set at our new music festival, The Five Day Forecast, we tried to find out a bit more about them.
The quartet came together while studying separate disciplines in Bath, and now come to the fray fully formed, with their own fiery strain of sound getting lips flapping up and down the country. Soul-stopping offering “2 Kids”, mixed by Marta Salogni (Shura, M.I.A.), is an especially alluring jewel - imagine Lorde fronting Echo and The Bunnymen and you're about halfway there - which sets our hearts aflutter.
Check out "2 Kids" below and get to know Swimming Girls via our Q&A afterwards.
BESTFIT: Could you introduce yourself for us please?
Swimming Girls: "Heya we’re Swimming Girls: Max on drums, Jay on guitar, Roo on synths, and Vanessa on vox."
What do you try to do with your music and how do you achieve this?
Swimming Girls: "We aim to write music that conjures up moving image and connects. We’ve never seen music as just for the ears (bear with). When you’re listening to a song, you’re using your mind to interpret the lyrics and even the melody. A good song is vivid and I guess that’s what we strive for. To 'achieve this' we write with certain scenes in mind. Writing about what’s real while steeping it in cinematography creates a binary opposition."
Can you tell us what musical and non-musical influences have shaped your sound?
Swimming Girls: "There are so many influences at play when it comes to our music. Dark textures from bands such as The Cure meet the vibrancy of colourful pop acts such as Cyndi Lauper on an instrumental basis. As with the previous question, films inspire us a lot. We’re all big fans of director David Lynch and love to embrace darkness with the neon. Our imagery is a big part of who we are as a band, and we love our artwork to tell a story; be a film cover."
What should people expect from your Five Day Forecast show?
Swimming Girls: "From our Five Day Forecast show you can expect to get a taste of our world. There are moments of darkness and light. We hope we can make you feel something."
What are you working on now/next?
Swimming Girls: "For the last couple of months we’ve been busy recording our next couple of singles and working on the artwork/visuals with Aidan Zamiri. I think these next chapters show us in a completely different light to our previous releases, so we’re really looking forward to hearing peoples’ responses. It’s been great to work with someone who is on the same page visually as us and what we want to achieve."
How is 2018 shaping up? What are you looking forward to next year?
Swimming Girls: "2018 is still kinda full of mysteries. We’re putting these songs out, deffo going to be playing some shows lol. All we know is that we’re excited."
