Sun Glitters shines for UK debut despite lightshow glitches
After a series of eleventh-hour scheduling changes, Victor Ferreira eventually succeeded in rolling out highlights from his debut album Everything Could Be Fine, in front of a notably sparse crowd at the ultra-hip Green door Store.
Sun Glitters‘ headline set topped off an immersive night of experimental electronica. First act Foreign Skin kicked the evening off with a noise that focused on the more twee end of the break-building spectrum, their naive melodies and slo-mo, sometimes amateurish beats calling to mind ex-Belle & Sebastian bassist Stuart David’s Looper project and Warp’s seminal early-’90s Artificial Intelligence series as well as more current post-dubstep flavours.
Sandwiched between Foreign Skin and Ferreira were Illegal Calamari – otherwise known as hotly tipped synth trio Regal Safari, performing undercover (as a twosome) for one night only because their “official” live debut isn’t meant to be till later this week in London. But Brighton got a welcome taste of their techno-infused, Leftfield-by-Schneider-TM schtick, those present enjoying the second arresting lightshow of the evening as well as the ever-bobbing duo’s harsh, cartoonish shadows.
But come Sun Glitters’ appearance, the lumière had failed him and Ferreira cut a somewhat lonely figure, hunched in the naked half-light over his glowing boxes. The son remained, mercifully: ‘Feel It’, ‘Felt Asleep’ and the uneasy hope of finale ‘Everything Could Be Fine’ raised eyebrows and expectations for future greatness. With touches of Ulrich Schnauss’s hazy effects overload in the mix and a sizeable dollop of Ferreira’s personality also evident, Sun Glitters shone.
