Sufjan Stevens announces five-volume album with new song "Meditation V"
Sufjan Stevens has announced his new five-volume album collection Convocations, and has shared "Meditation V" as a first taster from volume one of the project.
After teasing that "new holistic music" was arriving this week, Sufjan Stevens has announced Convocations, a five-volume project that Pitchfork reports is an homage to his biological father, who died just two days after the release of The Ascension in September last year.
"Meditation V" has been released today (6 April) as the first preview of volume one of his instrumental Convocations album. The entire first volume, titled Meditations, will be released on Thursday (8 April).
The other volumes of the 49-track Convocations album are titled Lamentations, Revelations, Celebrations and Incantations, and will be released as a five-volume album in a month. Each volume is described as "replicating a different stage of mourning" and is entirely performed, recorded, produced and mixed by Stevens.
