Spectres announce debut album Dying
Spectres, the Bristol-based toe-glarers - nowt to do with that James Bond malarkey - have announced the release of their debut LP, Dying. It's due out 23 February on Sonic Cathedral.
Inspired by the volume-output of acts like My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth and Swervedriver, Spectres peddle a thoroughly lacerating brand of noise. Bruised eardrums are to expected from the quartet.
They're originally from Devon, but relocated to Bristol in order to make "white noise" rather than "white reggae", apparently rife in the area, and then started Howling Owl, a nationally renowned indie label who've put out records by the likes of Oliver Wilde and other Bristol faces.
“It is very important us for have an identity away from Howling Owl,” says guitarist Joe Hatt. “It was always awkward putting our own records out as I think a lot of people just saw the label as a front to promote our own band, so now it will be nice to keep the two as separate as possible, it will benefit both the band and label massively. And it also goes without saying that when you get an opportunity to work with a label that has a great history and you’ve already admired for a long time and that inspired your own label, you can’t really turn it down. It was nice of Sonic Cathedral to come along when that didn’t happen, though.”
Speaking about Dying itself, the Hatt said: “When people hated us we just played harder. We want to snap people out of their comfort zones. We want our noise to smack the spoon out of their mouths that is feeding them the warm diarrhoea that is served by start-up PR companies. We want people to have to notice and have to react, not look at their phones or talk their friend who is looking at their phone.... it’s not a concept album, but there’s a theme running through it that is summed up in the title. The majority of the songs are pretty literal to my life and the scenarios of people close to me. I wouldn’t say it’s depressing, though. Lyrically, it was really cathartic to write."
