Spanish prosecutor seeking eight-year prison term for Shakira over unpaid taxes case
Earlier today (29 July) it was revealed that a Spanish prosecutor is looking to ask a court to give Shakira an eight-year prison sentence over a tax fraud case, where the Colombian star is accused of not paying taxes in Spain between 2012 and 2014.
According to Reuters, a document that was seen earlier today (29 July) confirmed that a Spanish prosecutor is asking a court to give Shakira an eight-year prison sentence for allegedly failing to pay taxes for two years in Spain between 2012 and 2014.
Earlier this week Shakira rejected a settlement offer from the prosecutor’s office to close the tax fraud case, and instead wants to go to trial. As Billboard reports, Shakira's UK publicists said in a statement that the Colombian star "has always cooperated and abided by the law, demonstrating impeccable conduct as an individual and a taxpayer."
Shakira is accused of not paying the Spanish government €14.5 million in taxes between 2012 and 2014, and according to Reuters, the prosecutor's document also revealed they are seeking a fine of over €23m if Shakira is found guilty.
Billboard reports that the Spanish prosecutor claims Shakira lived in Spain for more then six months of the years from 2012-2014, and should pay taxes in the country. Shakira’s Spanish public relations team reportedly said earlier this week that the star has already paid what she owes, with an extra €3m in interest.
