Soundcloud to introduce adverts, paid subscription and royalty scheme
Since its launch in 2007, Soundcloud has fast become the staple platform for uploading, streaming and sharing music online. To date, the service has been entirely free, but that now looks like it’s about to change.
As The NY Times reports, Soundcloud are striking up a new licensing deal, paving the way for adverts to be implemented on the site.
“SoundCloud will begin incorporating advertising and for the first time let artists and record labels collect royalties,” the NY Times article states. “Eventually, it plans to introduce a paid subscription that will let listeners skip those ads, as they can with Spotify and other licensed services.”
“People know that SoundCloud is very much a creator platform,” founder Alex Ljung told the Times. “They understand that if they hear an ad, then a creator is getting paid for it as well.”
Soundcloud have not yet announced these new changes but are expected to make a public statement in the near future.
