Sod the Marmite, Sainsbury's have expanded their vinyl range
Yeah, yeah, it's sad that Marmite's not on Tesco's shelves this week. When you're doing your weekly shop at Sainsbury's instead, why not grab a new record to soften the blow?
Vinyl will be stocked in 67 more Sainsbury's stores from tomorrow (14 October), bringing the total to 238 stores, with the current range tripling from 20 to 60 different records.
As well as LPs by David Bowie and Pink Floyd, there will also be seven titled Sainsbury's exclusive to Sainsbury's - including albums by Madonna, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Jethro Tull, and, erm, an special silver version of Michael Buble's Nobody But Me.
Sean Cowland, Sainsbury’s Music Buyer, says: “Following on from the unprecedented success we’ve seen since adding vinyl to our offer in March, we’ve extended the range to give our customers even more choice. We’ve seen incredible sales from timeless classics such as The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Fleetwood Mac, but also a more leftfield selection, like N.W.A. and The Smiths. By increasing the range, we can offer our customer a larger choice to enjoy in our stores.”
Sainsbury's say they've sold over 81,000 records since relaunching the range in March - they shifted 5500 copies of Fleetwood Mac's Rumours alone - and claim an 80% share in the "grocery vinyl market".
Despite apparently having the market cornered, the beleagured Tesco chain actually beat Sainsbury's to the punch when it came to stocking vinyl first.
