What was intended as a harmless gesture of teen rebellion and free advertising became, for a short while, the subject of a hate crime investigation.
Police officers in Commack, NY discovered the spray-painted homage to metal band Slayer on the side of a building in Wicks Park, “home to the Commack South Little League”, on Tuesday night.
Reports on the Commack Patch news site say that the local police department was investigating the graffiti as a hate crime, until officers “realized the markings, which included a pentagram, were symbols from the band, Slayer” – a revelation no doubt indebted to the street artist’s helpful inclusion of the pentagram and the word “SLAYER”.
