Simple Things 2015: Speedy Ortiz can't wait to see Big Jeff, share a salad dressing recipe
Speedy Ortiz discuss their life since the release of Foil Deer ahead of their show at this year's Simple Things Festival in Bristol.
In a snappy Q&A between travels, the quartet managed to answer a few questions for us on life at home, life on tour, and what they're looking forward to when they descend upon the city.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, they can't wait to reconnect with the city's musical barometer Big Jeff. In a slightly more unusual turn of events, the band have also divulged a pretty rad salad dressing recipe.
Hi! How have things been since releasing Foil Deer?
Pretty nice! I think all four of us have moved and almost none of us are living at our parents' anymore, and we've been on tour pretty consistently since April, which is good if you like touring (and we do).
Has life settled down much since the release?
Mostly we've settled into a life in which we are very seldom in our own beds, but I think we use our limited time at home to our individual advantage. For instance, I've learned to make a very good salad dressing from a Québécois restaurant called Aux Vivres:
Dragon Sauce recipe:
1/4 cup nutritional yeast
3 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp maple syrup
2 tbsp tamari soy sauce
2 tbsp water
2 cloves of garlic
Blend that ish up. Oh yeah. You just won salad.
While I've been making salad, Devin and Mike have put out music with other projects: Philadelphia Collins and Hellrazor, respectively. Very good stuff!
What's your favourite song from Foil Deer to play live?
"My Dead Girl" is fun because I get to play keyboard parts on my guitar. I like "Homonovus" too because Devin makes terrifying horror movie sounds on his guitar.
What can people expect from your Simple Things show?
From me: some kind of lasercut necklace with loose feminist ideologies. Potentially, four people with the flu (we are all quite under the weather this week, as living in a van will do.)
Have you played Bristol before? What are your memories of the city?
Yeah! Last time we were there we played with Empty Pools, our friend Leah's band (she's now in Alimony Hustle who are fantastic). I guess our favorite part of Bristol is hanging with Big Jeff. Hope we see him tomorrow!
Can you recommend anyone else that should people see when they're at the festival?
We're pretty excited to see Beak> for the first time, who've been an influence on some of our songs... and Chastity Belt are too killer for this world, so it'll be nice to play with them again.
Do you have many plans for 2016 yet?
Sleeeeeeeping. (Just kidding. Some plans. Not too many we can talk about yet. Definitely sleeping too.)
Speedy Ortiz play O2 Academy's Academy 1 on a bill with Skepta & JME, Lower Dens, Wire, and more.
We're hosting the Foyer Stage, with Micachu, Blanck Mass, and Slime all performing.
