Shigeto returns to Detroit for fourth album The New Monday
Michigan producer Shigeto, real name Zach Saginaw, has announced new LP The New Monday and shared lead single "Detroit Part II".
Saginaw draws from Detroit's musical fabric - both the the legacy and current state of being - for his latest collection, the follow up to 2013's No Better Time Than Now, which acts as a bridge between the city's sonic eras. The album itself takes its name from a weekly DJ event at MotorCity Wine called Monday, which Saginaw and pals take part in.
"Detroit Part II" is the sprawling, jazz-infused first taste of The New Monday - it's also the sequel to "Detroit Part I" which appeared on No Better Time Than Now. The visuals follow Saginaw and his friends around Detroit before ending at Monday at MotorCity Wine.
"It’s focused on a couple things and they all kind of come together to represent different things," says Saginaw of the new record. "My time back in Detroit, back living in Michigan and spending time with a lot of kind of original people who have always been here, learning from them, hearing stories from them, being influenced by them, and inspired by them."
The album features contributions from Kaleena Zanders, Silas Green, and ZelooperZ - a collaborator of Danny Brown's and part of ZGTO with Saginaw.
Shigeto plays a handful of European shows this autumn, including a date at London's Omeara on 9 October, before heading out on a North American tour.
