Hiss Golden Messenger collaborator Scott Hirsch shares classic country cover ahead of UK shows
Scott Hirsch has unveiled a marvellous rendition of The Flatlanders' "Tonight I Think I'm Gonna Go Downtown" as part of his new expanded edition of the Blue Rider Songs LP.
The original, which appeared on the country troupe's record More A Legend Than A Band, was released 45 years ago in 1972.
"[That album] has always hung in my mind as a masterpiece of a record," says Hirsch, a longtime collaborator of Hiss Golden Messenger. WI'm so drawn to all those liquid slide instruments, the singing saw, and of course the magic of Jimmie Dale [Gilmore]'s voice. In this version I had my friend Mikael Jorgensen (Wilco) come over to the studio one night to re-create the singing saw on his ARP 2600 modular synth. We had a lot of fun recording those parts. I'm so excited to spread the love of the amazing Flatlanders stuff to people if they haven't checked it out before."
As well as Jorgensen, Hirsch worked with Andrew Borger (drums) and Stephen Spencer (mixing). The track was reocrded at Echo Magic West and Cowboy Technical Services.
Hirsch plays End Of The Road Festival this afternoon and Moseley Folk Festival tomorrow before heading out on a short run of shows in Glasgow, Leeds, Bristol, Manchester, and London's Bush Hall on 8 September (Michael Chapman is playing the dates as well). Find out more.
