Savoy Motel: "We don't really have a scene that fits us or that we fit into..."

05 August 2016, 17:30 | Written by The Line of Best Fit

Savoy Motel's Jeffrey Novak gives us a little peek behind the band's curtain and tells us what makes 'em tick.

The four piece ooze vintage flair and mesh psych pop tones with feral axes - we can get a full tour of the Savoy Motel when the drop their debut record this autumn.

Savoy Motel consists of four very individual people; how did you all meet?

We all essentially met and became friends from hanging out at shows and parties in Nashville over the last decade.

You say Savoy Motel is defined by a feeling rather than a sound. What is the feeling that you personally get from the music on your debut album?

The groove makes you bend your knees and causes you to lean back as you're sucked into the song.

"Souvenir Shop Rock"'s video has very vintage settings, where did the inspiration for the video come from?

We weren't really trying to rip off anything directly. Visually we were in part inspired by Brian De Palma's early counter-culture films, like Greetings, and Hi Mom! that are the closest thing to an American version of Jean-Luc Godard for the late '60s/early '70s.

What did you learn from your previous bands, Heavy Cream and Cheap Time, that you could collectively bring to Savoy Motel?

Our previous bands taught us patience, and gave us a heads up on how to play the game a little better.

Are you looking forward to touring this autumn with Dandy Warhols?

Yes, I first got turned on to the Dandy Warhols when I was 16 and stuck in summer school. I found a VHS tape of MTV's 120 Minutes that my Dad had recorded for my sister, and it had the, "Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth" video on it. That was the first time I'd ever seen David LaChapelle's work, and it really blew my teenage head! I ended up getting the Dandy's Capitol debut on cassette shortly after that.

Who inspires you both from the present and the past?

That's a hard question, because we're all into so many different things musically. Jessica might be the most into current pop music, whereas Dillon is heavy into country and jazz. Mimi really digs outdoor jam bands, and I dig Little Feat.

You make music that pushes boundaries, do you hope that your debut album could create a new experimental music scene and encourage more musicians to branch out?

Totally! Because we don't really have a scene that fits us or that we fit into right now. Since we started a couple years ago, no one's known where to place us exactly. We never thought what we were doing was too original or new, so I was surprised there weren't already other bands like us.

When will we be seeing another music video? Any clues to which track it will be?

Possibly in the Fall. We're in pre-production for our next video right now, and it has to be shot before we leave for our tour in September. Dylan Carver, who did our first two videos, is directing us again, and it will be for our next 45, "Sorry People".

Savoy Motel's self-titled debut album is out 21 October via What's Your Rupture?. Find their upcoming live shows on their website.
